VIDEO REPORT: Vatican Excommunicates Chinese Bishop

On Saturday, the Vatican excommunicated a Chinese ordained bishop for lack of papal approval. This furthers an already tense relationship between Communist-backed Churches and the Pope.

Despite already having a Vatican-recognized Bishop in the city, Bishop Joseph Huang Bingzhang was ordained in Guangdong Province’s Shantou City by the state.

Pope Benedict XVI denounced the state-church, saying that he (quote) “once again deplores the manner in which the church in China is being treated.”

There are eight to 12 million Catholics in China, whose loyalties are divided between state-backed churches and the Pope.
