Reckless, Dangerous, Ineffective — that’s Bill C-51

Wow! When OpenMedia initially stepped up to oppose the government’s Secret Police Bill C-51 it was a lonely space.

Now ex-prime Ministers, Independent Conservatives MPs, a huge range of organizations and even media outlets, have all come out against the dangerous Bill C-51.

Now your OpenMedia team is empowering concerned Canadians by launching a new action platform today. Please check it out:

Why are people so upset about this scheme?

Well, let me be clear on this point. This law is:

  1. Reckless: It turns CSIS into a ‘secret police’ force with little oversight or accountability.1
  2. Dangerous: It opens the door for violations of our Charter Rights2 including censorship of free expression online.3
  3. Ineffective: It will lead to dragnet surveillance and information sharing on innocent Canadians that even Stephen Harper has admitted is ineffective.4,5

As if that wasn’t bad enough, the government is trying to ram this law through parliament in record time.

Ii, will you stand with Canadians from across the country in opposing Stephen Harper’s Secret Police Bill C-51?

As other countries make progress reining in secret spying, Canada is moving in the wrong direction. In fact, Edward Snowden recently called out CSIS for having the “weakest oversight frameworks out of any Western intelligence agency in the world.”6

Let’s reject the government’s fear tactics before they take root: speak out right now at

Thank you. Your support means a lot to me at this moment.

-Steve Anderson, on behalf of your OpenMedia team
