OTTAWA — A man who once dated notorious sex-killer Karla Homolka now stands accused of murder himself after the grisly discovery of a torso in Montreal, its severed foot and hand mailed to the Conservative and Liberal party offices in Ottawa.

Luka Rocco Magnotta — also known by the aliases Eric Clinton Newman and Vladimir Romanov — has an extensive online profile and significant Internet notoriety earned by videos in which he kills kittens. An apparent former stripper and porn star, various glamour shots show a young man with chiselled features and pursed lips.

One of Magnotta’s relatives told the Citizen they spent Wednesday night close to the phone in case Canada’s highest-profile fugitive calls.

“He hurt us when he was younger and we haven’t been in contact with him in a while,” said the relative. “We heard about all of this on the news, and then the police called and asked us to let them know if he calls us.”

It appears police have good reason to be in a hurry to make an arrest. CTV reported late Wednesday night that the package with the severed foot had a note inside it indicating that the suspect was planning to kill again. The note reportedly also said that a total of six body parts had been sent in the mail.

The bizarre and gruesome story began to unfold even before police found a decomposing torso in a suitcase that had been placed on the curb with a pile of garbage in Montreal’s west-end Snowdon neighbourhood Tuesday.

A video has been circulating on the Internet for several days which purports to show Magnotta, 29, repeatedly stabbing a man with an ice pick, then decapitating and dismembering him before playing with his limbs.

The Montreal Gazette has confirmed that police have obtained a video of the crime, and are taking steps to have it removed from a website where it was posted, but it is unclear whether it is the same video.
