Soon the Supreme Court will hand down its decision on the constitutionality of Obamacare. Their decision is crucial for our future as a Republic as well as for the next election, which might be our last chance to roll back Obamacare and the rest of the “fundamental transformation of America” that Obama wants.

Obamacare is designed to funnel everyone into one system, where unelected bureaucrats will decide what kind of care you get.

And what kind of care you can’t and won’t get.

The Obama administration designed Obamacare to destroy alternative systems, such as those set up by the Catholic Church.

Not only do progressives under Obama want total control of the health care system, these totalitarians also want total control of all social services, which is why they also seek to drive the Catholic Church out of the adoption/foster care system.

In Illinois, the state government severed contracts with the Catholic Church to provide foster care services after a disagreement over same-sex couples. The State, in effect, violated the Church’s right to religious freedom. As a result of the heavy hand of government, the children suffer:

“[T]he State of Illinois has made it financially impossible for our agencies to continue to provide these services,” reads a joint statement … by Belleville Bishop Edward K. Braxton, and other Illinois bishops involved in the case. …

“Since we now need to close offices and lay off employees, further appeals [of the State’s decision] would be moot.” …

“The Catholic Church has successfully partnered with the State for half a century in providing foster care and adoption services. While the State has forced the Catholic Church out of state-supported foster care and adoption services, the losers will be the children, foster care families and adoptive parents who will no longer have the option of Catholic, faith-based services.”

Mission accomplished!

In the same way, the Obama administration seeks to consolidate the health care system under total government control. Their “health care” system won’t work in their intended way unless everyone is within it, with no alternative. No way out.

Another Illinois bishop, Daniel R. Jenky of the Diocese of Peoria, sees through the plan, which uses issues like gay marriage, abortion, and contraception against Catholics, in order to force them out of providing health care, foster care, and adoption services. He gets it. Says Jenky,

Hitler and Stalin, at their better moments, would just barely tolerate some churches remaining open, but would not tolerate any competition with the state in education, social services, and health care. In clear violation of our First Amendment rights, Barack Obama – with his radical, pro abortion and extreme secularist agenda, now seems intent on following a similar path.

What’s next, the Catholic schools? Give them time; surely there’s a plan in the works to close down private schools, too. (That includes Lutheran, Baptist, Mormon, and Jewish schools, as well as every other.)  All the better to indoctrinate every child–to ensure that each grows up to be a good little creature of the state.

This quest for total control explains the “individual mandate” and it also explains why they cannot allow charitable persons the freedom (unless they’re Muslim) to use their own money to give care to others that the communist bureaucrats have already decided they do not deserve.

In the progressive mind, money does not belong to the charitable ones. The charitable ones do not know how best to spend their own money. They might use it to benefit those who the communists in Obama’s administration believe are undeserving, such as the elderly.

In the progressive mind, all money belongs to the State. The State, led by unelected bureaucrats, will decide who lives and who dies. Once the unelected deciders on the death panels have decided, you will NOT be able to get the care you want, no matter what.

That’s the entire point of their system: Total control, so some can’t use “unfair” means to get “unfair” outcomes, just because they’re “lucky” enough to have more money than others. Or smart enough to seek care at a Catholic hospital.

What chaos would ensue if the elderly could receive care at Catholic hospitals once they had already been denied care by Obama’s minions. Then every elderly person would demand similar care! Then We the People might decide that we don’t want totalitarianism, after all. And that will not do.

It’s required that everyone under communism must be equally miserable. Except for the top dogs!  They shall, deservedly, live like kings.

Make no mistake, communism is part and parcel of Obama’s planned “fundamental transformation” of our country.

Even today, retirees who receive Social Security benefits must by law be in the Medicare system. No opting out. Under Obamacare, there will be no opting out, either. Once the bureaucrats have decided, then it’s:

No mammograms for you! No PSA tests for you! No colonoscopies for you!

You will have nowhere to go, except, perhaps …

Ascension Health Alliance, the nation’s largest Catholic health system, has entered into a joint venture to build a $2 billion medical complex in the Cayman Islands.

The health care facilities could become a geographically advantageous site for medical tourism — offering a low-cost alternative for patients seeking special treatments and procedures, hospital care and rehabilitation in a tropical setting.

In recent years, a growing number of U.S. patients have traveled to Korea, Thailand, India and many other far-flung nations to receive medical care at discounted rates.

The Edmundson-based Ascension Health Alliance is teaming up with Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospitals of India “to bring innovative healthcare services” to the Caribbean and the Americas, the two companies announced today.

Narayana’s chairman and managing director, Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, is a cardiovascular surgeon who has a reputation of providing low-cost health care at medical facilities in India.

“Ascension Health has been working with Dr. Shetty for two years to explore ways to adapt his success at providing high-quality healthcare at low cost,” Anthony Tersigni, president and chief executive Officer of Ascension Health Alliance, said in a written statement. “Together, we are committed to bring first-rate healthcare provided in a world-class setting.”

The huge project — which the partners call a “health city” — is scheduled to break ground in August on a 200-acre site in Grand Cayman, the largest of the three islands comprising the Cayman Islands.

Grand Cayman is best known as an offshore banking haven for U.S. companies including hedge funds as well as wealthy Americans seeking tax shelters.

[T]he multi-specialty hospital will provide services including open-heart/bypass surgery, angioplasty, heart-valve replacement, cancer treatment, bone-marrow transplant, nuclear medicine, organ transplant and orthopedics.

The hospital will seek accreditation by Joint Commission International, the international arm of The Joint Commission, which accredits U.S. hospitals. …

The partners say that the health care project will create thousands of jobs on Grand Cayman, diversify the island’s economy, provide ongoing research and education opportunities, contribute to the health of the citizenry, and bring new industry to the country.

So instead of creating and saving jobs in the United States, by forcing the Catholic Church out of health care, Obamacare is destroying jobs here and creating them in Grand Cayman! All the benefits to the local economies will be lost in America and will go overseas, where the Catholic Church will continue its ministry. The loss will be ours.

Americans will be able to take advantage of these health cities, until Obama finds a way to prevent Americans from flying there to get the care that Obamacare demands that they not receive. Wait for it! It’s coming. It will simply not be “fair” that some who are denied care here might have the resources to pay for care in another country, so they will find a way to stop them. Whether it be through a special tax or simply by making it a crime, they will at least try to find a way to stop them.

Such health cities in India are already a medical tourist destination for certain UK citizens who, under their own autocratic national health system, are prevented from receiving drugs and surgeries that may save or extend their lives. Older people find themselves rationed out of cancer therapies or organ transplants, simply because their lives are determined to be worth less than the lives of younger people. The lives of the elderly are not worth as much to the entire “community”, so the community will not expend resources on them.

That’s communism, folks.

And so the hierarchy of the Catholic Church is opposing the mandates in Obamacare. Some Catholics rally to support the Church; but others do not, says Jenn Giroux, the former Executive Director of Human Life International America:

There are many liberal Catholics and Obama supporters who are trying to divide and confuse the faithful on the issues surrounding this attack on religious liberty and the impending mandatory requirement for employers to provide insurance plans which provide free contraception, abortion-inducing drugs, and sterilization. … Still others that oppose the mandate are advocating that the issue of contraception should be separated from the discussion of religious liberty all together. The reality is that these issues are quite inseparable as it relates to the practice of Catholicism and the moral burden that is placed upon the conscience of employers who provide contraceptive services. Only those who understand the grave moral evil of contraception and abortion understand that the Catholic Church will never compromise on these issues because to do so would lead to eternal ramifications for those involved.

Last month, the bishops warned that they would resist totalitarianism in a letter to the faithful in which they made clear

that the free exercise of religion is being defined down to a bare “freedom of worship.” That is, religious people are allowed to think and pray as they want in their homes and churches, but they cannot follow the dictates of their conscience when they provide services to the public.

Chicago’s Archbishop George understands Obama’s goals:

“What will happen if the HHS regulations are not rescinded? A Catholic institution, so far as I can see right now, will have one of four choices: 1) secularize itself, breaking its connection to the church, her moral and social teachings and the oversight of its ministry by the local bishop. This is a form of theft. It means the church will not be permitted to have an institutional voice in public life. 2) Pay exorbitant annual fines to avoid paying for insurance policies that cover abortifacient drugs, artificial contraception and sterilization. This is not economically sustainable. 3) Sell the institution to a non-Catholic group or to a local government. 4) Close down.”

George has been warning of the state’s intrusion into religious affairs for a long time. In 2010 he predicted, “I expect to die in bed. My successor will die in prison, and his successor will die a martyr in the public square.” …

“Liberty of religion is more than freedom of worship. Freedom of worship was guaranteed in the Constitution of the former Soviet Union. You could go to church, if you could find one. The church, however, could do nothing except conduct religious rites in places of worship–no schools, religious publications, health care institutions, organized charity, ministry for justice and the works of mercy that flow naturally from a living faith. All of these were co-opted by the government. We fought a long cold war to defeat that vision of society.”

Now, the bishops have made good on their threat to fight totalitarianism:   43 Catholic organizations have sued the Obama administration:

The lawsuits argue that a federal mandate issued by the Obama administration violates their fundamental religious liberty. The controversial mandate will require employers to offer health insurance plans that cover contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs, even if doing so violates their consciences.

The mandate has drawn heavy criticism from bishops in every diocese in the U.S. They warned that the regulation could force Catholic schools, hospitals and charitable agencies around the nation to close down.

At least 11 previous lawsuits have already been filed against the mandate by states, colleges, private employers and organizations throughout the U.S.

Now, 12 new lawsuits are being filed by 43 dioceses, hospitals, schools and church agencies in a dozen different jurisdictions across the country.

The Archdioceses of New York, St. Louis and Washington, D.C, are part of separate lawsuits against the measure, as are Catholic Charities organizations in several dioceses and the Catholic publishing group Our Sunday Visitor. Other dioceses filing lawsuits include, Rockville Centre, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Fort Worth, Jackson, Biloxi, Fort Wayne-South Bend, Joliet, and Springfield, Ill. — all in their respective districts of federal court.

Several Catholic universities around the country also joined in the lawsuits, including The Catholic University of America, the University of Notre Dame and Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Notre Dame president Fr. John Jenkins, C.S.C., said the lawsuit was filed “neither lightly nor gladly, but with sober determination.”

“We do not seek to impose our religious beliefs on others,” he explained in an email to Notre Dame employees.

Rather, he explained, “we simply ask that the Government not impose its values on the University when those values conflict with our religious teachings.”

According to Fr. Jenkins, the lawsuit is about “the freedom of a religious organization to live its mission, and its significance goes well beyond any debate about contraceptives.”

He cautioned that when the government decides “which religious organizations are sufficiently religious to be awarded the freedom to follow the principles that define their mission,” the nation has started down a path that could lead to “the end of genuinely religious organizations in all but name.”

This is a brave stand! Surely the Supreme Court will take notice of these many lawsuits.

We’ll find out soon, when the ruling comes down. In the meantime, let us pray.
