Falling from the sky: Inside the abandoned ‘ghostscrapers’ that litter America.

When everyone has left, when there are no people, no activity, no purpose for the building to be there, who is there to take care of it?
When there are no cleaners to tidy the mess, no janitor to fix the holes or set traps for the rats, no repairman to fix the plumbing, no security guard to protect it, no occupants to care – what happens to the building?
It is a story only too familiar in many cities in many states around America, where futuristic skyscrapers once rose out of dreams but stand desolate and abandoned, creating eyesores, dangerous conditions and a place for the city’s homeless to rest their weary heads.

Through recessions and destruction and failed economies, the ‘ghostscrapers’ only stand as a reminder of what America once was or at least thought of becoming.
Like the PacBell building in San Francisco, a neo-Gothic marvel abandoned last decade. Completed in 1925, the giant is capped with 13 foot tall art deco Eagles looking out over the great San Francisco expanse.
While the building was purchased in 2007 for $118 million, it has since been left to decay quietly in its own upscale way. Unlike most abandoned skyscrapers though, this one still has some life in it. Security guards patrol the ground floor, and the tower is lit up at night.

Norwich State Hospital in Connecticut: Opened its doors in October, 1904, and though the number of patients and employees were drastically reduced, it remained operational until October, 1996

The DPS was subsequently forced to shut down dozens of schools in the Detroit area, thereby leaving all of these surplus school materials to rot in the warehouse.
The Los export terminal coal processing and sorting tower, which at one time readied coal for shipment off to Japan but now stand abandoned and silent. The city of Los Angeles spent millions in taxpayer money to help fund this ‘revolutionary project’ in 1997, but within a few years the facility had become economically unsustainable and shuttered in 2001.
