The Odysee post highlights YouTube’s unannounced use of AI to enhance videos, such as improving clarity and smoothing skin, without creator consent, a practice confirmed by YouTube’s Rene Ritchie as an experiment on Shorts, sparking ethical debates about artistic control, as noted in a 2025 BBC article on AI-altered content.

The more processing, the more enhancement or value (debateably) added  tweaking by YouTube the more they have rights and ownership of the work  / content on YouTube, content that is significantly different than the original video you uploaded, making it a derivative work and not really the original creators work.

This revelation ties into a broader trend of AI manipulation in media, evidenced by a 2023 Samsung case of AI-enhanced Moon photos and a 2025 Netflix AI remaster of ’80s shows, which The Verge criticized for distorting faces, raising trust issues supported by University of Pittsburgh research on disinformation.

Odysee, a decentralized platform built on the LBRY blockchain since 2020, contrasts this by avoiding AI alterations, leveraging its peer-to-peer network to prioritize creator autonomy, though the respect for freedom of speak and personal / private liberty its some times accused of lax moderation and has drawn scrutiny for hosting what some might call “misinformation”, as per a 2024 Wikipedia entry.

YouTube secretly used AI to edit people’s videos. The results could bend reality

In March 2025, controversy erupted over an apparent AI remaster of ’80s sitcoms The Cosby Show and A Different World streaming on Netflix. The shows are available in high-definition, despite the fact they were originally shot on video tape. The Verge called the results a “nightmarish mess of distorted faces, garbled text and misshapen backgrounds”. Odysee – Wikipedia

Odysee wordmark

Odysee is an American decentralized video hosting platform, built on the LBRY blockchain. It positions itself as an alternative to mainstream services like YouTube, but with a focus on freedom of speech and decentralization. The platform enables users to upload, share, and monetize videos through cryptocurrency, while maintaining content persistence through a peer-to-peer network. Odysee was founded in 2020 by Julian Chandra. In June 2024, Odysee was acquired by Forward Research. The acquisition took place after Odysee’s former parent company LBRY lost a lawsuit from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in July 2023. Odysee is driven by blockchain, a decentralized protocol that allows digital content to be distributed and stored without a central authority. This blockchain network supports a peer-to-peer infrastructure, which allows users to upload and share videos.
